Want to understand what we mean by preventative care?
Under the umbrella of preventative care services we work with our patients on taking action before more serious conditions develop.
- Preventative care appointments
- Examinations
- Kids
Ongoing education and awareness with a focus on prevention is at the heart of our approach to all the services we offer, but this is especially true with our preventative care services.
Preventative care - it’s not just a clean!
A preventative care appointment is the recommended twice yearly visit to check teeth and gums for tooth decay, gum disease, and to monitor any other developments in your oral health.
Oral health starts with prevention, making regular hygiene cleans a must for every patient, so why do people put it off?
We think we have the answer to that question. They think that it’s just a clean, but that six monthly check is much more. It is your ticket to overall health.
We take great care with our patients during their regular preventative care appointments because this is the time when more serious issues can be identified early and stopped in their tracks.
Did you know good oral hygiene also contributes to your overall health by helping you avoid other health problems like stroke, heart disease and diabetes?
What’s involved in our preventative care appointment?
In a preventative care appointment we will:
- Complete an examination of your mouth, including your teeth and gums.
- Clean and scale your teeth, removing built up plaque.
- Check for early signs of more serious conditions, including checking for oral cancer.
- Apply topical fluoride.
Where do x-rays fit in?
Digital dental x-rays are an important part of evaluating your overall oral health, so it’s immediately visible what is happening under the surface and in between your teeth. Dental x-rays help identify problems that would otherwise not be seen.
If you are new to Dentists at Southport, we may recommend taking dental x-rays to view overall condition of the teeth and to help identify changes that may occur later. We understand some patients may have concerns about x-rays and that’s why we’ve installed advanced technology that uses the lowest radiation exposure.
X-rays are just another preventative measure we take that enables us to treat problems early, saving you time, money and unnecessary discomfort in future.
Here’s one exam you’ll always pass
Dental examinations are a first line of defence when it comes to understanding what’s going on with your teeth.
We complete different types of examinations:
Comprehensive – An examination for new and existing patients that looks in detail at all aspects of your oral health.
Periodic – For existing patients as part of their regular six monthly preventative care appointment.
Limited – For patients experiencing a specific complaint or oral health problem.
Want to know which one applies to you?
Kids and cleaning teeth? It can be tough!
Dental practices can be scary places for kids, simply because at first, it’s unfamiliar territory. We solve that problem by encouraging our patients to bring their kids in as early as possible.
Decay travels faster through primary teeth, so it’s particularly important that children come in for a check up every six months if they are taking good care of their teeth, and every three months if they’re not!
Why not try this?
For a first visit, we advise your child comes along with you to your appointment and watch what goes on.
With a little coaxing, we generally find there is greater enthusiasm about jumping into the chair, giving the dentist or oral health therapists the opportunity to have a quick look inside.
Thereafter, we make visits as fun and enjoyable as possible for our kids, focusing always on how they can be part of prevention by taking responsibility for regular brushing and flossing.
What about older kids and teens?
The best way for us to work with older kids and teens is to have them come in regularly. That way, we’re able to identify and stay on top of issues that can arise during these important developmental years.
Often these issues require more complex treatments, such as orthodontics. We work closely and collaboratively with our orthodontic partners to help manage your child’s pathway to a confident and healthy smile.
Make sure you talk with one of our team about the best preventative care for your teeth.
